About Raksanna

One of the most versatile Middle Eastern belly dancers today, Raksanna is known for her entertaining, dynamic and powerful Egyptian style belly dance featuring veil, zil work, stick (raqs al-assaya), Melaya and Saidi/Beledi folkloric dances. In addition, her creative works have showcased sword work as well as a unique blend of Middle Eastern dance with contemporary American music. Each piece Raksanna creates and performs looks and feels dramatically different, while capturing the beautiful essence of Raqs Sharqi.
PerformerRaksanna, known for her exciting and spectacular performances, has danced as a soloist for nearly a decade. She is featured in theatrical venues, at corporate events, weddings, festivals and fund raisers. In addition, she is often an invited guest to give demonstrations and educational lectures on the art form and history of Middle Eastern dance.
Certified by World Renown Instructor, Choreographer and Producer, Raqia Hassan. In December 2006, Raksanna returned to Cairo for Raqia Hassan’s (producer of the internationally recognized Ahlan We Sahlan dance festival) intensive teacher training conference where she received her certification from Raqia in Egyptian dance. She is honored to hold this professional credential. At this prestigious program, Raksanna was one of eleven teachers from across the world to be invited to perform in the ending gala ceremony.

You'll walk away with a solid foundation of a variety of foundational shimmies and exciting movements to incorporate into your dance routines. The primary focus of this workshop is technique. Bring your notebook, a bottle of water and be prepared to sweat!

Complex Combinations and Playful Patterns™ – Part II - Add on to Shimmy with Layers™ with a sassy and fun drum solo! The first part of this workshop focuses on three exciting patterns you can take with you to use in your next dance. "Dynamic Duets"

(3 Hours Total)

Duet combinations with Funky Fusion Flare taught by Yasmine assisted by Magic Hips Dancer, Huriyyah. Explore new ways to incorporate partner work into your routines whether it is for a Duet choreography or as part of a group performance. This class will cover some spicy yet mesmerizing partner combinations that will have you interacting with your dance partner and exploring a new dance connection. Don't have a dance partner to take the workshop with? No worries, we can pair you up with someone else in the class.

LINDA will teach:

“Saiidi-Inspired Pop Choreography: How to create folkloric-inspired and other choreography”

(4 hours total)

This is a great workshop set for all dance levels who want to get more out of their folkloric training, are choreographing for the first time, and/or seeking to teach their choreography more efficiently and effectively. Students will be able to take home a very upbeat pop choreography, new teaching/learning skills, as well as the tools to take their own choreographies to the next level.

Friday, July 17: Creating and teaching choreographies, using folkloric moves and styling with modern music, Saiidi moves, styling, and other technique, introduction to the choreography- framework and combinations. Students should bring pen and paper to take notes. Written choreography and some notes will be provided. There will be bouncing/hopping moves so please wear proper support! No props needed.

Saturday July 18: Applying the choreography framework: full choreography learned with emphasis on transitions. It is best if students take Friday if they want to keep up in Saturday's class. There will be no technique taught on Saturday's class, only choreography.

"Hot and Fresh: Tasty Cairo Combos", Saturday, December 6, 2008 9:00am - 12:00noon

Technique, styling and innovations in choreography as inspired by current trends in music as well as by the top dancers in Middle Eastern dance today. Amani will offer combinations specifically inspired by the “Old School”, Folkloric and Modern (or Fusion) genres found in today's Middle Eastern Dance. Combinations will begin with foundation or “kernel” combinations that can be used on their own or developed further for use in choreography. This workshop will be paired with Hot & Fresh: Tasty Cairo Combos II" Adding veil work, Amani will show you how to easily pull these combinations together to create beautiful and dynamic choreographies.

"Khaliji Party" - Sunday, December 7, 2008 1:00pm-4:00pm

“Khaliji” denotes the cultures and dances originating in the area known as the Persian/Arabic Gulf. More often than not, group dances are performed by women for women and emphasize the beauty of the costume and dancers hair. The dance movements include sharp quick shoulder shimmies, poly-rhythmic clapping, and some footwork. Amani will introduce the foundations movements, technique and rythmns of Khaliji styled dance, including a discussion of both history and culture and comparisson of regional styles. Amani will show you how to easily pull these techniques together to create fun and energetic combinations. This class will also expand upon the foundations movements, to include movement and rythmns of various "Khaliji" regional styles, to include but not be limited to the U.A.E., Iraq and Iran).

Amani Jabril is an instructor and choreographer based in Atlanta, Georgia. She has studied and performed extensively throughout Europe, the Middle East and North America.
